Inspiration came one night circa 1997, on the way home, passing an old gumball machine, a green ninja warrior,
caught Ulf Kleiner's eye. Later it became a mascot for the birth of Piroman.
Electro by-the-way of Miami-Bretzenheim, Germany.
Piroman's affinity for futuristic sounds in Electro and Miami Bass had been predisposed from visits as a kid to the
local fairs. In 1994, Ulf Kleiner, the man behind the alias, began studying Jazz Piano in Mainz. Alongside, his gear
collection started to grow: a 4-track recorder, Atari 1040, Roland JV 80, Emax II, Korg DS-8 j and the revered Siel
'KIWI' analog synthesizer.
With this setup and a few years of experimentation, Kleiner started to carve out his own sound and the PIROMAN
EP took shape.
Released in 1998 on S.O.C. (Scream of Consciousness Recordings), an independent label founded
by Erik Trinkaus (aka Erick Decks).
Consisting of three tracks, the EP opens with 'The Ouverture', 'Piroman's Theme' and 'La Turb'. All 3 tracks take
heavy inspiration from the sound coming out of Miami at the time, fused with European techno sensibilities.
An
award-winning animated music video accompanied 'La Turb', created in collaboration with Thomas Bauer (a friend
of Ulf) which will be releasing on Youtube, with the track, sometime very soon.
Following 'Sweat Songs' (released on Fragmentz in 1999), Piroman stepped back into anonymity, only known to a
few die-hard collectors and good friends. Or as someone aptly wrote on Discogs many years later: 'Piroman:
beneath the underground'.
In these years, Kleiner was hard at work. Devoting himself to the piano and other various projects in the field of jazz,
groove & soul, he also collaborated and recorded with a range of respected artists.
Time passed without a hint from Piroman, all the while diggers and music lovers began to discover his work.
Requests for music started to flood Kleiner's inbox, spurring him to delve into storage after all of those years.
And now - 25
years later - tadaa!! - the Piroman returns
The
requests for the 12 "s were joined by a few labels asking for
the original masters. And after some back and forth it is now
definite:
In february 2023 Piroman will resurface: The Piroman EP
will be released as a re-release of the original 12" on AGT
Records in Barcelona (PIRO 001). Also, the video for 'La Turb' will be awakened
from its slumber (a DVC-Pro videocassette), dubbed over and appear on
YouTube for the first time.
Then
we will see how it continues with the little bass man - in his secret
warehouse there is still some material stored, which has never seen
the light of day...
